A53 flyover to reopen tonight

The A53 flyover at Etruria is set to open today, 4 months since it was closed.

Repairs and work costing taxpayers £154,000 has been carried out, following the discovery of crumbling concrete around a joint on the bridge in July.

Work to finish installing the second and final bridge joint and painting the white lines on the road is taking place today, and the road is set to reopen tonight (8 November).

The closure has sometimes led to queues snaking back to the A500 in one direction, and Cobridge traffic lights in the other.

But employees who work near the flyover say traffic has been better during the closure.

Motorist Sarah Wright commutes between her Congleton home and her Festival Park place of work.

The 34-year-old Plus project manager said: “It has probably been better since it closed. Going home has definitely been better.

“I could have bought a house with how much they’ve spent on it. And why have they removed a tree?

“I don’t think it’s worth it for the amount they’ve spent on it.”

But Ali Shah – who manages Papa John’s pizza takeaway, on Etruria Road – thinks the opposite.

The 29-year-old said: “The roads have been worse.”

The bridge was closed following the discovery of problems with concrete around one of the joints

A council spokesman said: “While unfortunately the work has taken a considerable amount of time to complete, we believe we have not only fixed the immediate problem, but have also removed the need for more costly and time consuming maintenance in future years.

“Safety and making sure we get it right has to be the number one priority with something like this.

“We would like to thank the motorists who reported the initial pothole to us and to apologise to anyone who has been inconvenienced by the works.”
