Builders merchant workers take on international rally for charity

A team from Emerys Timber and Builders Merchants in Stoke-on-Trent are taking part in an international rally to help raise money for charity.

The gruelling 4 day rally from the 5th to the 8th of September, will take in the highways and byways of Western Europe encompassing hundreds of miles of driving, all in the name of charity.

Amongst the wacky racers taking up the challenge will be the four enterprising employees led by Managing Director James Hipkins.

Organised by natural stone and hard landscaping company Pavestone, The Pavestone Rally requires entrants to purchase a roadworthy car for no more than £500, decorate it, and drive from Reims in Northern France to Lake Como in Italy, via Stuttgart, Salzburg and Venice.

Along the way the teams will need to complete various challenges, and did we mention they’ll be doing it all in fancy dress?

Racing under the nickname the Dick Emery’s the team will take some of the characteristics of their 60’s namesake who was
very good at inhabiting characters.

Jonathan Goodwin, general manager of Emerys at Cliff Vale said: "Our staff and customers have been fantastic at helping us raise money with oatcake mornings and business such as Wrights supported us with their donation of pies for our trade day so that we could raise money with pies, peas and gravy.

"Raffles, vehicle sponsorship and donations through our Virginmoneygiving page have also helped us along the way
to our £5K target."

The team have already beaten their fundraising targets from the previous rally in 2017, when their driving prowess left something to be desired – having to hitch rides to the finish as their car broke down at the start of the competition.

James Hipkins, Managing Director at Emerys Timber and Builders Merchants, said: "We are looking forward once again to taking part in the rally and the team are busy preparing our vehicle for the journey as well as creating our innovative costume changes.

"I am sure our enthusiasm to do well for the three charities will outweigh our lack of professional racing experience and hope as many people as possible will support us and help us raise money."

Charities benefitting from the rally are Teenage Cancer Trust, Variety and the RainyDayTrust.
