A 26-year-old man from St Helens has now also been arrested in connection with the incident.

He has been released on conditional bail.

Police say enquiries in relation the incident are ongoing and as part of their investigation detectives want to hear from anyone with information or CCTV or dashcam footage that may aid their investigation.

Detective Inspector Claire Jesson said: “A man suffered serious head injuries as a result of this incident and we are determined to establish precisely what happened and who was responsible and then make them face the consequences of their actions.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we want to hear from anyone with any information or footage that may be relevant to our investigation.”

The 40-year-old man has now been discharged from hospital.
