Motorists warned of delays due to traffic light upgrade in Heron Cross

Motorists are being warned to expect delays on a busy commuter route in Stoke-on-Trent.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is upgrading the existing traffic lights – which includes installing sensors – at the junction of Blurton Road, Grove Road, Heron Street and Duke Street, in Heron Cross.

It means four-way temporary traffic lights at the clogged-up crossroads for the next nine weeks.

Shan Shandrakuma has owned Heron Cross Store for the past nine years.

The 44-year-old said: “I can’t see this improving the situation. The problem is Blurton Road is always busy up to the traffic lights and people turn left to go to the industrial estate.”

But neighbouring Heron Cross Pharmacy has welcomed the changes.

Pharmacy manager Jackie Challinor said: “This has got to be done.

“There is a build up of traffic in the morning because of the changing of the lights. So hopefully, this will improve that. I’m all for it.”

The four-way temporary traffic lights will be in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. It is hoped that the temporary lights will be removed outside these hours.

A council spokesman said: “We’re upgrading the traffic lights in Heron Cross to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, particularly at peak times.

“The lights are being replaced with more modern traffic signals which can detect queues building up and keep the green light on for longer. The work will see cables and sensors installed for a distance up to 50 metres away on all arms of the junction.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while we carry out these works which will improve journeys in the long run.”
