New mental health centre to provide 24 / 7 care for patients in Staffordshire

A new mental health crisis care centre is set to open later this month at the Harplands Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent.

The Hazelhurst Unit will see the area's mental health support groups all located in one place for the first time, and in another first there will be a 24 hour / seven days-a-week service offered.

The service being offered will be for both adults and children, and in the case of youngsters it will become one of just a handful a of similar services that are offered in the country at this time.

Health bosses also hope that with all mental health services in one place and next to the Royal Stoke Hospital that demand on A&E from those in crisis will be reduced.

The head of the North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare Trust that runs the Hazelhurst unit says that many of the admissions to A&E are people suffering with mental health issues, and with the service now located next door, will make it easier for the emergency department to transfer patients once their physical ailments are seen to.

The service will work by asking those who need advice or reassurance while in distress to call to speak to a mental health professional, who will then direct them to the most appropriate and accessible service to meet their needs.

Currently mental health services in North Staffordshire can receive over one hundred calls per day from those seeking help and advice.

Anyone feeling that they are in distress and wishes to seek help can call 0300 123 0907 to speak to a mental health professional and receive a referral if necessary.
