Port Vale football club have signed up to use Stoke-on-Trent City Council's leisure centres.

The partnership will see players use Dimensions and Fenton Manor Sports Complex as part of their health, fitness and rehabilitation work.

Dimensions has recently launched its new gym following a £300,000 investment in the facilities by the council at the Burslem based leisure centre.

Players will have access to the gym, exercise studios and the site's pool as well as the facilities at Fenton Manor.

A number of Vale players, along with the council's cabinet member for health and fitness, Lorraine Beardmore, visited Dimensions yesterday (Tuesday) to see for themselves the new state of the art gym.

Councillor Beardmore said: "It's brilliant we've got Port Vale signed up to exclusively use our gyms. They've got a global membership so they can use Dimensions and Fenton Manor.

"It's great for aspiration for younger people to see their heroes using the gym facilities and encourage them to come on down.

"And it shows that teams and sports around the city use the facilities that the city has to offer."

Port Vale Manager John Askey has welcomed the move. He said: "We want to be a part of the community and to be seen at these places is good for the football club.

"Hopefully it will encourage people to go down to the gym and keep fit.

"But it's not only partnerships with the football club we're trying to encourage; we want to encourage local businesses to stay local and to each other, and (Port Vale) can be at the heart of that."

Dimensions Leisure Centre has an open weekend which takes place from 7.15am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6.

Anyone who takes a tour and registers their interest can get a free, one-session family swimming pass for Dimensions.

If you become a member on that weekend, you can get two months’ free membership with no joining fee; and any member who refers a friend gets another month free.

There will also be free exercise taster classes in the new studio and free basic fitness advice on offer over that weekend.

For the taster sessions, call 01782 233500 for availability and to book.

The City Council say that membership at Dimensions Leisure Centre includes gym access with new state-of-the-art equipment, swimming with one child at Dimensions, swimming at New Horizons, all exercise, spinning and aquafit classes at Dimensions, badminton and table tennis at Dimensions, and car parking.

The new facilities at Dimensions are part of Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s aim to support the vision and delivery of the city’s Physical Activity Strategy.

This looks to make Stoke-on-Trent a more active city, encouraging more residents to engage in some form of physical activity to improve health and well-being.
