Scores of people turn out for vigil for children who died in a house fire

More than 50 people attended a vigil last night for the four young children who died in a house fire in Stafford a year ago.

Riley John Holt, aged 8, Keegan Jonathan Unitt, aged 6, Tilly Rose Unitt, aged 4, and Olly Unitt aged 3, were killed following the blaze on Sycamore Lane on the Highfields estate.

Last night, people gathered at the Oxleathers public house before walking to the site of the former home which has since been demolished.

Prayers were said before a minute's silence was held.

Organiser of the vigil, Debbie Howe, Landlady of the pub said: "Absolutely lovely, beautiful, great atmosphere as in they were here to remember, the community again got together for the family to remember the children and it was beautiful.

"Highfieds will always be strong, everyone will stick together its a really strong community.

"We would like a permanent memorial here we tried to get a park but I don't think that is going to happen. We certainly don't want another house building here with the community we have got the strength we have got it just would not happen."

Paul Millgate-Scarrett, organised a memorial at Castle Church School last year, he said: "It was very moving to see so many people here just paying their respects, it was lovely.

"I do believe it would be insensitive to build another house here, its a lovely little area, why don't they plant a few trees help the environment and a bench so the people of Highfields have got somewhere where they can sit and relax that would be a lot better than building some houses."
