Crewe leave it late again

For the second game running, Crewe Alexandra left it late before beating Crawley 2-1 last night.

Manager Dave Artell made two changes going into the game.

Striker Chris Porter made his first start since December after recovering from injury while Stephen Walker also came in for Chuma Anene and Daniel Powell.

The Alex took the lead on 72 minutes, Callum Ainley was brought down in the area and Chris Porter duly dispatched the penalty.

The visitors equalised with a spot kick of their own, six minutes from time through Nathan Ferguson.

But in the 90th minute, Porter was on hand to head home Owen Dale's cross at the far post to secure another precious three points.

Speaking to the club's official website after the game manager Dave Artell said: “I thought we deserved the three points and that the result flattered them. We were by far the better side and deserved to win by more than we did but we didn’t.

“Credit to their goalkeeper because he has made some great saves. He made one save from Pickering that I still can’t believe he has made. He has made the most saves in the league and won their player of the year a couple of times.

“It was tough to beat him and if it had been a boxing match it would have been stopped at half-time.

“They have come to kick lumps out of us and maybe two seasons ago, we would have found it difficult but we stand up to that and let our football do our talking. The referee let them get away with a lot and I will go in after and try and help him.

“I felt the second goal was coming, I really did and it was a great cross from Owen and Ports couldn’t miss. We thoroughly deserved it and we have to keep it going.

"I want to be entertained by my team and I am. They are showing that. They deserve great credit for that."

The Alex remain second in the table, just two behind leaders Swindon who won 1-0 at Northampton.

Crewe are back in action on Saturday when they make the trip to the team below them Plymouth Argyle.
