Crewe move up to second

Crewe Alex moved up to second in the table after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Walsall.

Manager Dave Artell made just the one change with James Jones coming in for Paul Green who dropped to the bench.

New loan signing Stephen Walker was on the bench along with Chris Porter who has recovered from injury.

The Alex fell behind in the 15th minute when Caolan Lavery gave the home side the lead.

Crewe equalised five minutes after the restart when a corner was swept home at close range by Daniel Powell for his third goal in as many games.

Oli Finney then netted the winner with a sweetly struck shot on 68 minutes.

Speaking after the game to the club's website manager Dave Artell said: “I thought we were a lot better in the second half than the first but in the end, we thoroughly deserved to win the game.

“We gave away a terrible goal and half time probably came at the right time for us. We didn’t rant and rave. As I’ve said, we are there to help them and give them instructions and those little details to improve us.

"We are in it together so if it doesn't work then it is a collective thing and we win, draw or lose together.

“I must give credit to the midfield three. They didn’t have as much as the ball as I or they would have wanted in the first half but full credit to them second half, they wrestled the initiative back in our favour.

“We have worked on Daniel Powell’s movement at corners, so it was good to see that work pay off. It doesn’t all the time, so it was nice to see it work today.

“When you are hot you are hot and he is very hot at the moment with his goals and long may that continue.

“It was a terrific finish from Oli and that is what he is in the team for. He is in the team to score goals and he made that finish look a lot easier than it was. His goal ratio is something like 6 goals in 12/13 starts or something like that. He has to be patient but his goals have seen him have his chance and it was a terrific goal.

He added: “I thought our game management was excellent. People think that is about playing the clock down but it isn’t. They didn’t have many chances in the second half and they certainly didn’t have a shot at our goal in the final 20 minutes and that is very pleasing.

"The fans were immense and I am pleased we got that win back on the road for them."

Crewe are up to second, just four points behind leaders Swindon and with a game in hand.

The Alex are back in action on Saturday when they entertain Oldham Athletic.
