Miller at the double as Vale seal first home win in five months

Port Vale took a big step towards safety with a 2-1 win over promotion chasing Mansfield Town.

The hosts suffered a big blow before kick off with leading scorer Tom Pope ruled out with a knee injury with Ricky Miller coming into the starting line up.

The Vale conceded a penalty on 24 minutes when Leon Legge was penalised for a foul.

But goalkeeper Scott Brown flung himself to his left to deny Nicky Ajose.

The Valiants, then turned the game on its head just after the restart.

Ricky Miller opened the scoring on 50 minutes slotting home from close range.

He then doubled their advantage with a second, two minutes later.

Ajose then atoned for his earlier penalty miss by pulling one back just after the hour mark.

But the Vale saw the game out for their first home win since October and first under new boss John Askey.

The victory lifted them up to 21st in the table, seven points above the relegation zone.

The Vale are back in action on Tuesday night when they entertain relegation rivals Yeovil who are a point below them in the table.
