Stoke take another step closer to safety

Stoke City moved another step to closer to safety with a 3-1 win over relegation rivals Charlton.

Manager Michael O'Neill made three changes going into the game.

Tyrese Campbell returned from injury, there was a recall for Bruno Martins Indi and new boy James Chester was handed his debut.

Sam Vokes, Josh Tymon and Liam Lindsay made way.

The Potters struck first on 28 minutes through James McClean.

He had a simple tap-in after Nick Powell had headed a Sam Clucas free kick back across goal.

The visitor equalised in first half stoppage time.

Andre Green's cross was converted at the far post. At first it appeared to be a Tommy Smith, but the goal was credited to Addicks defender Ben Purrington.

Stoke hit back straight after the restart through Tom Ince who slotted home after being played in by Joe Allen. It was Ince's first goal since August and a 3-1 defeat at opponents Charlton.

And the Potters made the game safe with a third on 66 minutes through Nick Powell.

Tyrese Campbell laid the ball off for the over-lapping Smith and his cross was swept home at the near post by Powell.

The result lifted Stoke above Charlton and into 20th, five points above the relegation zone.

Michael O'Neill's side are back in action on Wednesday night when they entertain Preston North End.
