Stoke undone by two set-pieces

Stoke City were beaten 2-0 by promotion chasing Preston North End last night.

Manager Michael O'Neill named an unchanged line-up going into the game following victory over Charlton at the weekend.

The Potters dominated the first half, Tyrese Campbell went close with a rasping drive that was too hot to handle for Declan Rudd, but Joe Allen's follow-up header was straight at the stopper.

Sam Clucas saw a goalbound shot blocked by defender Ben Davies while James Chester saw a header palmed away for a corner.

Stoke were undone just before the hour mark from a corner. The ball fell invitingly for Alan Browne who made no mistake from close range.

North End doubled their lead on 75 minutes. Another corner wasn't dealt with and substitute Paul Gallagher found Tom Barkhuizen who swept the ball home from close range despite appeals for offside.

The result leaves the Potters in 21st place, four points above the relegation zone.

Stoke also have injury worries over James McClean and Thibaud Verlinden who both left the ground on crutches.

Verlinden was taken off less than 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute, while McClean suffered a knock in the first half.

The Potters are back in action on Saturday when they make the trip to the capital to take on Queen's Park Rangers.
